Solar and Lunar Cycles: How They Influence Our Lives and Hormones

The sun and moon have rhythms that determine more than day and night, plant growth,

temperature. They also correspond deeply with our bodies and how they feel. The solar cycle, or the sun, and the lunar cycle, the moon, are complex. Understanding them is a key component to understanding our bodies, natural rhythms, and the polarity between men and women.

What Are the Solar and Lunar Cycles?

The solar cycle is based on the sun’s daily and yearly patterns. It governs the 24-hour day and the changing seasons over the year. This cycle influences light exposure, temperature, and biological clocks, which regulate sleep, metabolism, and mood.

The lunar cycle follows the moon’s phases, lasting about 29.5 days from new moon to full moon and back. This cycle affects tides, animal behavior, and even human biology. Women feel the physical differences following the solar and lunar cycles, and they correspond with a woman's natural cycle.

How Men and Women Differ in Their Cycles

Men primarily operate on the solar cycle. Their hormonal rhythms and energy levels tend to align with the 24-hour pattern and seasonal changes. Men's hormones, primarily testosterone, fluctuate mainly on this 24-hour cycle, which is why when men have the correct amount of sleep, they can do most of the same thing every day and feel the same.

Women, on the other hand, experience both the solar and lunar cycles. Alongside the solar circadian rhythm, women’s bodies respond to the moon’s phases, which influence the menstrual cycle and hormonal shifts.

The White Moon Cycle and Red Moon Cycle

Ayurveda is something I've come across in my research on this subject. It is a philosophy focused on balance in mind, body, and soul. This knowledge originated in India over 5,000 years ago. In Ayurveda, the moon cycle is viewed as a detoxification process.

The new moon is associated with Vitta Dosha, time for reflection and rest. The full moon, Kappa Dosha, symbolizes growth and energy. Women's cycles either respond with Vitta Dosha or Kappa Dosha. The white moon cycle is when women ovulate during the new moon and bleed during the full moon. This is associated with fertility, creativity, and nurturing. Women who ovulate on the full moon and bleed during the red moon are on the red moon cycle, mainly associated with healing and leadership.

How Hormones Fluctuate Through Solar and Lunar Cycles

Hormones respond to light and darkness, which are governed by the solar cycle. Melatonin, the sleep hormone, rises at night and falls with morning light. Cortisol, the stress hormone, peaks in the early morning to help wake the body.

For women, the lunar cycle adds another layer. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuate with the moon phases, influencing mood, energy, and fertility.

  • During the White Moon Cycle, estrogen rises, boosting energy and focus. This is a time to launch new things, do more intensive work, and be more social.

  • In the Red Moon Cycle, progesterone increases, lowering energy. To nourish your body during this time, get more rest. Now is when to be more introspective, planning, journaling, meditating. Walks do more for your body than a run physically, and metaphorically during this phase.

Practical Ways to Align with These Cycles

  • Tracking you cycle is a great way to understand the way your body is working.

  • Use the White Moon Cycle to plan active projects, social events, or creative work.

  • Honor the Red Moon Cycle by allowing time for rest, journaling, or gentle activities.

  • Men can benefit from syncing with the solar cycle by prioritizing consistent sleep and exposure to natural light.

Recognizing these natural rhythms can improve well-being, productivity, and emotional balance.

Exploring the solar and lunar cycles reveals a profound connection between our bodies and the universe. Women’s unique experience of both cycles offers a powerful way to understand and honor their changing energy and hormones. Men’s alignment with the solar cycle provides a steady rhythm that supports daily life.
